Infrastructure supporting Bishop Auckland as World Heritage Destination (Zone 1)

The project will unlock new developments within Auckland Castle Deer Park by supporting the construction of a new access road, connecting the A688 to the North East of the town, with a newly constructed visitor car park (c1200 spaces). Located close to the river on the outskirts of the town centre, the car park will serve the visitor attractions of Eleven Arches Park, Kynren, Auckland Castle Deer Park and Binchester. The provision of the road and car park will help the town cope with influxes of visitor numbers and provide a world class visitor experience to the predicted 1m visitors into the town annually (by 2029). Bridges connecting the car park to the Eleven Arches site will be constructed and shuttle bus provision for visitors who need additional assistance to access the town will be provided to support visitor movement to town services.
